How to Read an Ext4 File System on Windows?

If you have a Linux-based system that uses an Ext4 file system, it might be difficult to access your files from a Windows-based system. This is because Windows does not natively support the Ext4 file system. However, there are ways to read the Ext4 file system on a Windows-based system.

Method 1: Using External Software

There is an open-source software called Ext2Fsd that allows you to read and write to an Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file system from a Windows-based system. It is straightforward and easy to use. Here are the steps:

  • Download and install Ext2Fsd on your Windows-based system.
  • Launch the application and locate the Ext4 partition you want to access.
  • Right-click on the partition and choose "Mount Drive".
  • The Ext4 partition will now be accessible from your Windows-based system.

Note: While using external software to access your Ext4 file system works, it does come with some risks. Always make sure to backup your data before attempting this method.

Method 2: Using a Virtual Machine

Another way to access your Ext4 file system from a Windows-based system is by using a virtual machine. A virtual machine is like having another computer inside your computer. Here are the steps:

  • Download and install a virtual machine software like VirtualBox.
  • Create a new virtual machine and install a Linux-based operating system that uses the Ext4 file system.
  • Mount the Ext4 partition within the virtual machine.
  • You can now access the files from the Ext4 partition within the virtual machine.

Note: This method requires more technical knowledge than the previous method. If you are not familiar with virtual machines, it might be best to seek help from someone who is before attempting this method.

Method 3: Using a Live Linux CD/DVD

If you don't want to use external software or a virtual machine, you can access your Ext4 file system by booting your Windows-based system from a live Linux CD/DVD. Here are the steps:

  • Download a Linux distribution that supports Ext4 file systems such as Ubuntu or Fedora.
  • Burn the Linux distribution to a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB drive.
  • Boot your Windows-based system from the CD/DVD or USB drive.
  • Mount the Ext4 partition within the live Linux environment.
  • You can now access the files from the Ext4 partition within the live Linux environment.

Note: This method requires a bit of technical knowledge but is generally considered one of the safest ways to access your Ext4 file system on a Windows-based system.

sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /mnt/ext4_partition

These are some of the ways you can access your Ext4 file system on a Windows-based system. It's always recommended to backup your data before attempting any of these methods.
